About Madera

The lumber flume

Madera, Madera County

Madera is the Spanish word for wood, and the town was founded in 1876 at the lower end of a flume that floated lumber more than fifty miles down from the Sierra Nevada. When the sawmills declined, vineyards and orchards took their place. The granite courthouse of 1900 survives as the county museum, set in a park near the center of town.
